HYPERMETROPY

Hyperopia, popularly known as the “nearsightedness” disease, is an eye defect that occurs when the incoming rays fall behind the retina instead of the retina after refraction in the lens of the eye.

WHAT IS HYPERMETROPIA?

Hyperopia, popularly known as the “nearsightedness” disease, is an eye defect that occurs when the incoming rays fall behind the retina instead of the retina after refraction in the lens of the eye. As a result of the rays focusing on a virtual point behind the retina, the image becomes blurred on the retina and therefore the patient cannot see near.

Hyperopia, which is commonly known as the problem of nearsightedness and is commonly seen, also has problems in farsightedness if the patient has high hypermetropic values.

WHAT CAUSES HYPERMETROPIA?

Hyperopia is usually seen in advancing age. Hyperopia, which is directly related to genetic factors, can also be congenital. Although it is not felt at first, it may increase with advancing age.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPERMETROPIA?

Blurring in the image is the most basic symptom when looking at a fixed point. Apart from that, difficulties in focusing on nearby objects, burning eyes while reading a book or working on the computer, easy distraction, sensitivity to light, and inward-looking eyes, especially in children, are among the symptoms.

HOW IS HYPERMETROPY TREATED?

Hypermetropes that occur under routine doctor control but have no complaints are only followed up. The aim in the treatment of hyperopia is to bring the light together with the retina at the right point. Glasses are the most preferred treatment method because they offer economic convenience and easy maintenance. However, as the degree of hyperopia gets larger, the lens of the glasses also thickens, which negatively affects the image quality. Another treatment method is contact lenses. The most important point in the lens is cleaning and maintenance. If the patient has preferred the lens, he should never go beyond the hygiene rules.

In hyperopia, surgical methods are preferred besides glasses and lenses. The LASIK method is one of the commonly used methods, but it is not applied to everyone. This treatment can only be applied to people who are over the age of 18 and whose eye number has not changed in the last year and whose eye number is below 6. The healing process is quite fast. LASEK treatment can be applied to people whose corneal treatment is not suitable for LASIK. PRK is another method that can be used in the treatment of hyperopia. It is done with the logic of stripping the epithelium at the top of the cornea and applying laser to the underlying tissue.

Recently, surgically applied intraocular lens implantation is also very popular. It is very advantageous for patients with high numbers and who cannot be applied laser.
