Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

The operations performed to eliminate sagging, excess fat and other similar problems in the abdomen for various reasons are called tummy tuck or “Abdominoplasty” as it is called in the medical literature.

WHAT IS A Tummy Tuck?

Although aesthetic disorders in the abdomen can be seen in both men and women, it is a preferred operation to remove the sagging seen in women after pregnancy.

After pregnancy, the skin in the abdomen cannot fully return to its original state and deformations occur. It is often not possible to completely correct this bad image with methods such as diet and sports. Abdominoplasty can solve this problem with a single operation.

With abdominoplasty, the skin that has lost its elasticity is collected and the excess fat is removed and the person is given a flat stomach.

The treated area includes the belly and waist, helping to reduce fat and excess, loose or saggy skin.

In some cases, it also involves restoring weakened or separated muscles, this is known as Diastasis Recti (split abdominal muscles) which is a common post-pregnancy condition.

The aim of Abdominoplasty Surgery is to remove excess tummy skin, typically caused by significant weight loss or pregnancy that diet and exercise alone cannot reduce.

CANDIDATES FOR TUMMY TUCK

  • Tummy Tuck Surgery may be a great option to achieve or restore a firmer, contoured abdomen area and tighter, smoother belly skin.
  • The procedure may be suited for individuals with excess, visibly sagging skin around the tummy area resulting from significant weight loss, pregnancy or skin ageing.
  • Significant weight loss through Bariatric Surgery, such as Gastric Bypass or Gastric Sleeve Surgery and/or lifestyle and nutritional changes often leaves behind redundant, sagging tummy skin and skin folds.
  • Exercise will help tone and tighten your underlying muscles, but will not help reduce the sagging skin that has resulted from weight fluctuation or the loss of skin elasticity and resiliency.
  • Abdominoplasty is not intended to take the place of exercise regimes or healthy eating. A good candidate must be at a stable weight and should have no underlying health issues

THE SURGICAL PROCESS

In the light of the examinations and consultations performed by the physician before the operation, the technique to be applied in abdominoplasty and the details of the operation are determined.

Abdominoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. While a large-scale abdominoplasty is performed between 2-4 hours, this time is reduced by half in smaller operations.

During the operation, the skin tissue is stretched towards the ribs from all sides and a large surface is lifted so that the muscles remaining in the interior are prominent.

After the prominent abdominal muscles are combined and shaped, they are fixed by sewing. If necessary, excess fat can be removed with liposuction.

After all these procedures, the upper skin is fixed by stretching it downwards. In the final stage, the belly button is placed in its new place and stitched and fixed. The operation is terminated by removing the sutures.

POST-OP RECOVERY

The recovery process after a tummy tuck may vary according to the metabolism and lifestyle of the person.

Usually, the patient is discharged after a few days of hospital control. It is normal to feel pain and suffering during this process.

Depending on the situation, your doctor will intervene with painkillers and antibiotics to help you overcome these aches and pains.

The scars formed after the operation gradually become lighter, but they are not expected to disappear completely. However, since these scars will be in the bikini area, underwear camouflages these scars and it is not possible to see them from the outside.

The final results may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete. Typically swelling will begin to minimise within the first two weeks following your surgery and will continue to improve throughout your recovery period.

Incision lines can take from 12 to 18 months to fully mature, and scar formation can vary from patient to patient.

During the operation, if the muscles inside are interfered with, scars may remain after the operation. This mark usually remains inside the underwear and is not visible. There may also be a scar on the edge of the navel, but this scar is not noticed as it remains in the navel.

A few days after the operation, you can walk with the help of a relative. Since the stitches will not be fully healed in the first week, you should avoid movements such as sneezing, coughing and straining as much as possible.

After 1 week, you can start walking by yourself and start the exercises that will accelerate the healing that your doctor will recommend. Your return to your business life may take an average of 7-10 weeks.

You will need to work with your Surgeon to allow for adequate and proper healing time. It is important to consult with your Surgeon before returning to daily activities such as driving, lifting and exercise, and to wear the post-operative compression garments throughout your recovery period for the designated time frames.
