ASTIGMATIC

Astigmatism is a visual impairment caused by the structurally irregular curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye. This irregular curvature causes the rays not to be fully focused on the retina, which results in a blurred image.

WHAT IS ASTIGMAT?

Astigmatism is a visual impairment caused by the structurally irregular curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye. This irregular curvature causes the rays not to be fully focused on the retina, which results in a blurred image. Depending on the type of astigmatism, the rays fall either in front of or behind the retina, resulting in the patient’s inability to see far or near clearly.

WHAT CAUSES ASTIGMATIC?

Astigmatism may be of genetic origin, may be congenital, or may occur as a result of a disease that causes changes in the corneal layer. It can also happen during a blow to the eye and a surgical eye operation.

HOW DOES ASTIGMATIC PATIENT SEE?

Astigmatists see objects as elongated and scattered.

WHAT ARE ASTIGMATIC SYMPTOMS?

Although it differs from person to person, the main symptom of astigmatism is blurry or shadowy vision at distance or near. Scattered or scattered lights, difficulty driving at night, eye fatigue after long-term reading, eye itching, headache are other symptoms of astigmatism.

HOW IS ASTIGMATIC TREATED?

Patients with mild astigmatism may not need treatment if the condition does not bother the patient. In severe cases, glasses, contact lenses or laser surgery are applied.

Glasses: It is the treatment method mostly preferred by people with astigmatism. The glasses used contain a special cylindrical lens.

Contact lens: Because contact lenses are worn directly on the eye, they can provide clearer vision and a better field of view. However, regular cleaning and maintenance should be done.

Orthokeratology: Orthokeratology ‌(ortho-k) involves the use of a series of rigid ‌contact lenses to reshape the cornea. The patient has to wear this lens for a certain period of time every day. In this way, patients with moderate astigmatism can get a clear image without lenses or glasses, albeit temporarily. But ortho-k is not permanent. As soon as they leave these lenses, they may begin to experience visual impairment again.

Laser surgery: Astigmatism can also be corrected by reshaping the cornea with LASIK or PRK techniques.
