GASTRIC BY-PASS SURGERY

A by-pass is a surgical process in which the size of the stomach is reduced and the first portion of the small intestine is bypassed, which restricts food intake.

Gastric bypass is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity as the resulting weight loss is typically extreme

HOW TO PREPARE FOR GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY?

If you are planning to have surgery, you are likely to undergo a few different tests to make sure that a gastric bypass is right for you.

You will be advised by your doctor about any changes you need to make regarding medical intake and diet in the weeks or days before surgery.

THE SURGERY

You will have general anaesthesia before this surgery. You will be asleep and pain-free.

There are 2 steps during gastric bypass surgery:

  • The first step makes your stomach smaller. Your surgeon divides your stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section. The top section of your stomach is where the food you eat will end up. This section will be about the size of a walnut. It holds only about 1 ounce (oz) or 28 grams (g) of food. Because of this you will eat less than before.
  • The second step is the bypass. Your surgeon connects a small part of your small intestine to the pouch. The food you eat will now travel from the top section of your stomach into this new opening. As a result, your body will absorb fewer calories.

RECOVERY / RESULTS

You will be given specific instructions by our team of surgeons after your surgery. Please note that the recovery process is very important. You can be assured that you will get continuous feedback and follow up by our team to ensure that your recovery process is as smooth as possible.

During the first month, you will be able to handle small amounts of food. Gradually, you will be able to add solid foods. You will notice feeling full very quickly – after eating two tablespoons of food. Your physician may also recommend that you take nutritional supplements to compensate for the lack of food you can consume.

During the first two years, you can expect to lose one-half to two-thirds of your surplus body weight. Weight loss will continue, in most cases, for a year and a half before it reaches optimal conditions.
