Myopia can be called short-sightedness problem. It is one of the most common eye problems. It mostly manifests itself with the complaint of children between the ages of 7-10 who cannot see the board clearly and may increase until adulthood.
The eyepieces of people with myopia cannot focus on distant objects, so they cannot see clearly, and they do not have such a vision problem for nearby objects.
Environmental effects are important in the increase of myopia, which is generally seen due to genetic factors. It is normal for myopia to increase with age.
Myopes often squint because they can’t see far. They cannot read road signs, especially while driving. They have difficulty reading the subtitles while watching television.
In children, myopia manifests itself as the inability to see the board, squinting, rubbing their eyes constantly, not being able to notice distant objects, and the desire to watch television, tablet and phone closely.
Myopia can be treated by using glasses or contact lenses, depending on the degree. If your degree is very advanced, you may have to use glasses and lenses constantly. Glasses or lenses do not reduce your degree of myopia, but prevent progression.
If you do not want to use glasses or lenses; Laser treatment or intraocular lens treatment, also known as “eye drawing” among the people, can also be used. With these treatments, your farsightedness can be treated to a certain extent and you can continue to live without glasses or lenses.
LASIK, PRK and SMILE are surgical treatment methods used for myopia.
LASIK
It is the most commonly used operation for myopia. A thin flap is created on the top layer of your cornea. The surgeon performs this procedure with a laser or another instrument. After shaping the cornea with another laser, the flap is moved back into place.
PRK
It is the operation of reshaping the middle layer of the cornea with laser in order to flatten the curve of the cornea. Thus, light rays are focused directly on or closer to the retina.
SMILE
SMILE is a laser treatment applied mostly to patients with thin corneas, low-grade myopia and astigmatism. It can be applied if it seems appropriate after the doctor’s control.
People with farsightedness may prefer laser treatment when they do not want to use glasses or lenses. There is no guarantee that the eye will be completely healed after laser, but 95% of people treated with laser can see without glasses or lenses without any problems.
